At PERKii we talk a lot about the science of our probiotic encapsulation, but what about the people behind the technology, ensuring your gut gets the good stuff? Su Hung Ching, has been with PERKii from day one, and we thought it time to have a sneak peak into the life of a PERKii scientist, with a few questions.
Hey, Su. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became involved with PERKii?
Hi! I’m one of the inventors of PERKii. My background is in Biotechnology and I started out my career working with medical devices. About 7 years ago, I was involved in developing applications for our encapsulation technology and this lead to the creation of the probiotic technology we still use in PERKii today.
You certainly have been here since the start! We know that the encapsulation is great for armour-plating probiotics. But, can the technology be applied to elsewhere, outside of food and drink?
It can! Since I started with the company, we have demonstrated applications in areas such as nutrition, pharmaceutical and aquaculture. We are currently working on applying the encapsulation technology in agriculture.
Very interesting - watch this space! What's been the highlight of your career so far?
I'm not just saying this because it's PERKii interviewing me, I promise. For me it was to see PERKii grow from a concept in the lab to a fully fledged company with products ranged in 3500+ stores.
Good answer, Su. Now, we hear the question about a 'typical day' a lot. What's yours like?
I’m usually in by 7.30-8 and my day starts off with emails, then I move on to meetings with students that I supervise to plan the week ahead. At any given time, there will be a few projects running in parallel so half my working time will be spent in the lab.
Sounds busy, very busy. Moving away from PERKii, is there any future (or present) technology out there that interests you?
I see AI and automation having the most significant effect in terms of transforming our lives. We can already see its effect on manufacturing, logistics and retail. I just hope AI doesn’t take over my job as well!
Don't we all! You have accomplished so much already, what is the key to that and one thing you’re working towards at moment?
To never stop learning. My aim for the last 5 years has been to learn/develop a new skill/sport/hobby every year. This year I’ve taken up golf but just cant find enough time to practise.
Good luck with that Su, if your accomplishments thus far are anything to go by I'm sure we'll be watching you compete in the PGA in the not too distant future! Thank you so much for your time and all the hard work you do for PERKii.
